World Prematurity Day 2024

Hi everyone, Hibbah here!

On World Prematurity Day I had the privilege of assisting at a vibrant stall with Stephen Morris, dedicated to supporting research on delivering medications at home i.e. the MiniMeds study. As someone who was born prematurely (I was 24-weeks old!), this experience was especially meaningful – it truly felt like a full-circle moment to give back to a cause that is so close to my heart.

A video about our day out!

The stall was buzzing with energy, and one of the most amazing aspects of my day was meeting so many premature babies and their families; their tiny fingers, so full of life and determination, reminded me of my own journey. Each family had a story unique to their lives, and it was a privilege to hear about their triumphs and challenges.

My role involved sharing information and collecting data for the ongoing MiniMeds study. It was rewarding to explain how this study aims to minimise the harm for delivering medication, ensuring that each child has the best chance to thrive, and their family has the best support network. Talking about the research and experience behind it all brought a new appreciation for how far we’ve come in understanding and addressing prematurity.

What truly stood out for me was the sense of community. Meeting families, hearing their experiences, even holding hands with the little ones who have already overcome so much reminded me of just how strong we all are! It truly is humbling to reflect on how neonatal care and research helped me as a premature baby, and now, I am helping others in advancing the ways that I was once helped.

What you told us about medicines!
(each dot in a speech bubble is a family telling us they experienced a similar situation)

World Prematurity Day wasn’t just an event for me – it was a celebration of perseverance, community and progress. It reminded me of where I’ve come from, and inspired me to continue supporting families and researchers to make all the difference! I hope to keep working with lovely people like Stephen Morris and the wider community, to transform the lives of families and children!
