Networking – October 2024 (part 2)

The second part (and slightly delayed) blog about networking I have been doing is about a group based at the university called ‘CHORAL’. This stands for Child Health Outcomes Research At Leeds.

CHORAL is also a new group of people, who share the aim to improve the lives of families living with health needs around Leeds and West Yorkshire.

It is paid for by a combination of the university, hospital and hospital charities.

An example of how they have helped this project is to put us in contact with student and graduates who are looking for research experience. In fact, two recent psychology graduates, Ella and Hibbah have been helping with the literature review and public engagement work. It’s really helpful to me (Stephen) to have an extra pair of hands, and share some of the work with.

I (Stephen) am helping CHORAL grow their community of researchers and projects. As a PhD student, I am still learning, but we can also help more junior researcher get experience with how research studies are organised and run. And likewise, one of my supervisors (Dr Simon Pini) is a senior member of the group and an expert in doing research with families who is helping our project.

Another thing is that we understand not everyone will be interested in a project about medicines. But with CHORAL, we can help signpost people to projects which are of interest to them. CHORAL runs projects on the topics of children and adolescent cancer, children’s intensive care, and children’s wellbeing, mental and physical health, to name a few!

Another thing CHORAL helped us with recently, was to support us with organising a researcher showcase for research in child health. I am part of a group of people who work at the hospital who try to share ideas and knowledge that people have got from research.

Thinking more long term, CHORAL may well be a good partner for us to seek more money to continue this research after our 3 years of funding are finished. We will certainly continue to work closely with this group in the future.

That’s all for now, up next is what we’ve been getting up to for world prematurity day. We have video content for that too! Stephen
